The Antidote – Essay Ten : Convalescence – Building the Foundation

For me, one of life's pleasures is taking new-to-me roads off of old familiar paths just to see where they go. I possess a good enough sense of time and direction that rarely do I get lost. But even when that happens I don't worry much for I know I will eventually pop out somewhere and recognition will suddenly flood my mind.

"Oh, so that's where it comes out."

The sense of joy and excitement I experience when I stumble upon a familiar place from a new point of view is priceless and never gets old. In fact, knowing this is always a possibility further encourages me to take that turn into the unknown rather than stick to the old tried and true.

This is precisely what I experienced when I read On the Beach's fourth installment in this middle series of his epic creation The Antidote.

Changing the Script

After many years of fighting the 'system' head on and going precisely nowhere, during a period of reflection and self examination two things became glaringly obvious to me.

One, the only thing I can truly change is myself and my own lifestyle.

Two, if I were to encourage others to engage in personal change in any meaningful way, my example speaks so much louder than my words.

The Antidote – Essay Nine : Convalescence – The Connection – What It Is Not

Often we are told what something 'is' and are left to infer what it is not, a fools errand if ever there was one and a sign of inferior or incomplete thinking and presentation by the author. Defining what something 'is' involves much more than just assuming the reader not only understands the words the author is using, but also the author's point of view.

In his ninth installment of The Antidote the author, On the Beach, makes no such assumption and carefully lays out his vision in a series of Thirteen Observations. It was wonderfully refreshing to 'hear' an author explain why and how he is deconstructing my present day point of view using easily understood words and language.
