Of all the potential natural or holistic alternatives I have researched, none have been a more difficult subject to seriously consider than colloidal silver. But since the mainstream media and medical community are so vehemently opposed to it I can't help but be intrigued.

It matters not that there is evidence of humans using silver for it's antibacterial properties thousands of years into the past. Modern medicine claims that use of colloidal silver has no proven advantages and causes a condition known as argyria, which irreversibly turns people blue.

Even worse, once you get into the arena where people accept silver as an invaluable resource, debates rage as to which types of silver are beneficial or harmful. The shouting can be overwhelming, almost to the point of turning back all but the most stubborn or daring.

One of the problems with sharing the information I have found is that there are very few  sources which give information on various aspects and qualities of colloidal silver that are not advocating a certain product or practitioner.  I almost decided NOT to include a section on silver for that very reason.

Assume that all information below and elsewhere else is biased.

During the 1980s, lab testing at Syracuse University and the UCLA School of Medicine demonstrated how colloidal silver was highly effective against bacteria, viruses, and fungal organisms, even those that had become resistant to antibiotics. http://www.naturalnews.com/041408_colloidal_silver_antibiotics_alternative_medicine.html

"This is an area where confusion and concern developed needlessly. Few things in life are as cut-and-dried as the fact that silver is completely safe when used within normal limits. The U.S. government provides a very clear guideline for the safe oral intake of silver. We've simply provided an easy method for applying that guideline to the safe use of any silver supplement product."  http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/02/07/new-guidelines-released-for-safe-usage-of-colloidal-silver-supplements.aspx

Scientific Information on Colloidal Silver http://www.silver-colloids.com/Reports/reports.html

Many antibiotics are thought to kill their targets by producing reactive oxygen compounds, and Collins and his team showed that when boosted with a small amount of silver these drugs could kill between 10 and 1,000 times as many bacteria. The increased membrane permeability also allows more antibiotics to enter the bacterial cells, which may overwhelm the resistance mechanisms that rely on shuttling the drug back out. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=silver-makes-antibiotics-thousands-of-times-more-effective

When it is pointed out that colloidal and nano-silver are used by NASA, Potters for Peace, the Hong Kong Subway System, Cure-Aid, and major hospital burn units, the detractors often concede that perhaps it works externally; however, they maintain that when it is taken internally it is ineffective and it causes dangerous toxicity due to silver build-up. In a familiar refrain when it comes to silver and other alternatives to mainstream drugs, it is also claimed that colloidal silver taken internally has no "scientifically" proven benefits.http://www.tbyil.com/MM-vs-ColloidalSilver.htm

Bentonite Clay

NEVER with a metal spoon...

Calcium Bentonite Clay causes metal to stick to it through opposite electrical charges. One of the purposes for using the clay is to remove toxins (many of which are metal) from your body. If you use a metal spoon to measure or stir your clay into water, you will be introducing metal into your body with the clay.

Whether you bathe in it, use it as a skin cleanser, swish with it or drink it - never use metal to serve, prepare or store it. I have read conflicting claims as to whether or not Bentonite clay also attracts the toxic BPAs found in most plastics. As a precaution, we store our clay in glass jars and to measure and mix it, we use small wooden spoons.

Here are some wonderful sources for more information:

This website is dedicated to educating the public about the myriad uses of using calcium bentonite clay. This is not a retail site. If you are interested in learning just exactly what clay can do for you - and how it has been helping people for thousands of years - just click the navigational links and visit the different sections of our website. http://www.aboutclay.com/clay_info.htm

Bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins. When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical, or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release it’s minerals for the body to use. Bentonite also helps get oxygen to cells as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead. http://wellnessmama.com/5915/the-benefits-of-healing-clays/

This study is just the beginning; an awakening for the sleeping world and the medical powers-that-be that clay is a serious contender in the field of safe healing. The missing element in advancing the interest in clays has been group research studies, which is proof for the FDA. The pioneer who is responsible for this study is Thierry Brunet De Courssou, who pursued the work his mother started and broke through to Dr. Williams. http://www.naturalnews.com/022475_clay_healing_bacteria.html

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a strong antibiotic which has been shown to be clinically effective against e-coli, MRSA and even in treating diabetes. Cinnamon can be consumed in it's ground form or as a powerfully concentrated essential oil.

A wonderful therapy packing a natural one-two punch is the combination of consuming honey and cinnamon. Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. This approach has been shown to effectively treat numerous diseases and conditions.

I put a few drops of cinnamon bark essential oil (along with few drops of clove oil) in my tea as part of a  daily preventative maintenance routine.

There are big differences between cinnamon bark oils and those coming from the cinnamon leaf. Please do your research and understand before purchasing and trying. Also, note that cinnamon oil is a powerful skin irritant and you may want to avoid using it topically.

Interestingly, the International Journal of Food Microbiology lists cinnamon as capable of killing 92% of gram negative and positive bacterial strains out of 25 tested. http://www.healthyanswers.com/nutrition/2012/02/stay-healthy-with-clove-and-cinnamon-essential-oils/

A study conducted by a group of surgeons found that a cinnamon oil solution was able to kill common infections – many of them found in hospitals. Some of these hospital-acquire infections are MRSA and streptococcus. Cinnamon oil was found to be as effective as antiseptics used to combat infections caused by these bacteria and could be used in hospitals. Similar study by French scientists found that cinnamon oil of 10% or less strength was able to fight various strains of bacteria, like E.coli and staphylococcus, resistant to conventional antibiotics. http://www.benefitsfromcinnamon.com/benefits/cinnamon-as-an-antibiotic

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers cinnamon to have a warming effect on the body, which not only remains consistent with the enkindling properties assigned to it by Ayurveda, but also supports why we often found it to be such a satisfying staple of our winter breaks from school when we were kids. According to Chinese tradition, cinnamon relieves the uncomfortable chilliness born from being exposed to the wind. http://herbalacademyofne.com/2013/12/cinnamon-for-health-more-than-just-a-holiday-spice/

Cinnamon is no joke – it’s quite potent and can take your health to the next level. Whether you smell it, ingest it, or apply it, the benefits are very real and more than skin deep.
