Cognitive Dissonance
I grew up in Southern New England, a predominantly ‘liberal’ region of the US then as now. Nearly 20 years ago I moved to the mid Atlantic region of the US, best described as mixed in political persuasion, though trending towards ‘liberal’ in the major population centers. Get out of the cities though, and it is most definitely more ‘conservative’. This is where I’ve lived for most of the past 20 years.
It is important to understand that definitions, including those of the political ilk, morph and change over time. What was once considered ‘conservative’ 50 years ago would in many respects be considered ultra conservative or alt-right today. The same goes for what society considers ‘liberal’ today verses decades ago. Mix in state and regional variations and one quickly understands that if located in any other part of the world, the ‘United States’ would be viewed as six or seven different countries united by common heritage and economics.
